Temples, rice terraces, surf lessons, and incredible food — Bali doesn't have to cost a fortune. Here's exactly how we did it.
Bali has a reputation as an expensive destination, built largely by Instagram influencers staying in cliff-edge infinity pool villas. The reality? Bali is one of Southeast Asia's best value destinations for independent travelers. Here's a real breakdown of a 7-night trip for under $800 per person.
The budget breakdown - Accommodation: ~$180 (7 nights at ~$25/night) - Food & drinks: ~$140 (~$20/day) - Transport: ~$80 (scooter rental + occasional taxi) - Activities: ~$150 - Miscellaneous/souvenirs: ~$80 - Total: ~$630 (leaving $170 buffer)
This excludes flights — budget airlines from Southeast Asian hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Bangkok frequently offer Bali fares under $100 return.
Day 1–2: Seminyak & Canggu Base yourself in Canggu for the best balance of vibe and value. Guesthouses with pools run $20–30/night. Rent a scooter ($7/day) for the entire trip — it's how Bali moves. Eat at warungs (local eateries) for $2–4 per meal; nasi goreng (fried rice) and mie goreng (fried noodles) are staples. Sunset at Tanah Lot temple is free to walk near (small fee to enter the inner area).
Day 3: Ubud Take a 1.5-hour scooter ride to Ubud. Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest ($4), stroll the Ubud market, and hike to the Campuhan Ridge for free panoramic views. Cooking classes in Ubud run $25–35 and include a market visit — excellent value and a memorable experience.
Day 4: Rice Terraces & Waterfalls The Tegallalang Rice Terraces near Ubud charge a small photography fee (~$1–2). Tegenungan Waterfall is a 20-minute drive from Ubud ($1 entry). Pack your own snacks and water to avoid tourist-priced vendors.
Day 5: Mount Batur Sunrise Hike Wake at 2am for a sunrise hike up Mount Batur (an active volcano). Guided treks run $30–40 including breakfast at the summit — one of Bali's most memorable experiences at a very reasonable price.
Day 6: Surf Lesson Kuta and Seminyak beaches offer beginner surf lessons for $15–25 including board rental. If you can already surf, renting a board independently costs $5–8/day.
Day 7: Uluwatu Spend your last day at Uluwatu Temple perched on a cliff above the ocean ($3 entry), then catch the Kecak fire dance at sunset ($10 — genuinely spectacular). Jimbaran Bay for a seafood dinner on the beach is a worthy splurge for the final night (~$20–25).
Budget tips - Avoid ATMs that charge conversion fees; use a fee-free travel card where possible - Negotiate prices at markets — initial prices for tourists are typically 2–3x the real price - Eat where locals eat — if you see motorcycles parked outside, it's a good sign - Book accommodation with free cancellation and watch for last-minute drops
